Oh sure, there’s plenty of talk about the light house route, but we’ll happily advise you to take a turn on Highway 12 and head north a ways – where they’re waiting with a Year-Round Welcome in New Ross, Nova Scotia. Year-Round Welcome Ross Farm Museum

Starting with a step back in time at Ross Farm Museum. There you can experience what life was like in every season for Captain William Ross and his family as they lived off the land back in the late 1800s. From tapping the trees for syrup in the spring, tending to the crops in the summer, packing up preserves every autumn to get them through the winter months and celebrating the holidays with sleigh rides and snowshoe adventures. Ross Farm Museum is a real working farm alright – with crops and cattle, sheep and horses plus a producing cooper’s mill too.

Costumed Interpreters can be found throughout the 60 rolling acres complete with historical houses, barns and workshops. That includes the team inside their main building too. That’s where you’ll find more exhibits, a wonderfully well stocked gift shop and their just opened and oh so delicious restaurant – The Hearth Room Café. Their marvelous menu is full of the freshest and yummiest sandwiches, soups, specialty coffees and so much more. While were on the subject of food we’ve got to tell you about the Forties Community Centre who host the most delicious meals for every occasion. From their bountiful breakfasts to their Oktoberfest feasts to their legendary Christmas dinners – they are cooking around the calendar. Of course their dances and variety shows are cookin’ too as are their craft markets, crib nights, concerts and – on and on! Year-Round Welcome New Ross Trails

Outdoor enthusiasts will love all the trails in New Ross. With stunning views and breathtaking vistas they make for the most beautiful backdrops no matter the season. If it’s a leisurely stroll you’re after then take the trail along shores of Lawson Lake – on two feet or horseback. For the more adventurous among you – take a hike up Porcupine hill to Ruby’s Trail – where you’re sure to find all sorts of sweet sites. From the beautiful gardens to the charmingly painted rocks to the festively famous – Twig’s Chalet. A real favorite spot with the young and young at heart. What’s that? Who’s Twig? Well, just in case you hadn’t heard – Twig is a very special Christmas Elf who built his Chalet in New Ross because New Ross just happens to be smack dab in the heart of the Balsam Christmas Tree Capital of the World! In fact Twig’s got the perfect spot to overlook all of the lovely Christmas Tree Farms in the area. Those that export balsams to lots around the world and welcome families year after year who’ve made the annual trip to New Ross to get their Christmas tree a treasured tradition.

In addition to the Year-Round Welcome – we should mention a few seasonally specific reasons to visit New Ross – so mark your calendars and make your plans to be there the third Friday and Saturday in August. That’s when the New Ross Farmers Association proudly welcomes everyone to the New Ross Community Fair. The two day event is filled with something for everyone to enjoy – from Horse riding competitions and Ox pulls to Chainsaw Challenges and Concerts and so much more. Pumpkin Planting and harvest at Ross Farm Museum

Pumpkin picking is one of the many fantastic fall events in New Ross – but ask any of the hundreds of families who make that annual trip to Ross Farm Museum and they’ll tell you it’s really involves two seasonal sojourns. You see every spring the young and the old gather to plant their pumpkins seeds with the greatest of hopes that come autumn they’ll enjoy a happy harvest.

New Ross Christmas Festival

And as you might imagine for being in the centre of the Balsam Fir Christmas Tree Capital of the World the Holiday Season is a VERY big deal in New Ross! So much so that the entire community comes together for the first weekend of December to host the New Ross Christmas Festival. This year will mark their 31st Annual Festival with something for everyone – everywhere you look. From their BIG Tree lighting and carol sing to craft markets and wreath-making classes to gift markets galore – there’s no shortage of festive fun over the course of the three days.
