Truth and Reconciliation Day
We are so lucky to call Nova Scotia’s South Shore our home and we humbly acknowledge that we live, work, and play on unceded Mi’kmaq territory, that we are privileged to be gathering here in Mi’kma’ki, that we are all treaty people, and that we wish to walk together in peace and friendship.
That’s why were so proud to tell you about two very special days in Autumn and invite you to join us for all of the incredible events created to recognize and celebrate the true heritage of this beautiful part of the world.
Every year on September 30th Canada observes Truth and Reconciliation Day. A day designated as a national time of reflection, learning and community involvement. Here on the South Shore we’ll be gathering at the Hank Snow Hometown Museum in Liverpool at 1pm for a moving afternoon of dynamic cultural demonstrations, live performances and very special guests including Elders, Survivors along with Chief Deb Robinson. All of this will be leading engaging evening set to begin at 7pm complete with Waltes, delicious food and more.
Events continue on October 1st in recognition of the Traditional Mawio’mi for Treaty Day. Held annually as a reunion for many Mi’kmaq, this day provides all of us with a great opportunity to learn a part of Nova Scotia’s 13,000-year-old history. Celebrations are set to begin with the Grand Entry at 12noon followed by a fantastic demonstration of Indigenous dance. The Mawio’mi will include Inter-Tribals, Specials and the Candy Dance. There will also be a community market featuring skillfully handcrafted art, jewellery, traditional clothing and more.
Events are FREE!!! All ages are welcome and all are encouraged to wear orange as a symbol of solidarity and support for the survivors of residential schools and their families. We’ll remind you too that these events are deeply meaningful and often solemn so we thank you in advance for your respect of all who are involved and the day as a whole.
We do hope you will join us and event hosts Two Feathers Mi’kmaq Designs for both days as we acknowledging the past and work towards fostering a future of healing and understanding.
