Lovely Day In Lunenburg
It’s hard to know where to begin when you’re in Lunenburg – between the wide array of restaurants and wonderful shops, the beautiful old architecture and storied boardwalk. You could surely fill a hundred buckets and not get it all in, so in an effort to lighten your load we proudly present a “Lovely Day In Lunenburg” Bucket List complete with a little bit of everything that makes this spot on Nova Scotia’s South Shore so special.
Starting with the charming and colourful colonial buildings you’ll see all throughout the seaside town. One of only two urban communities in North America designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site – most of the properties in Old Town Lunenburg date back to the 18th and 19th centuries. Stroll up and down the charming streets and you’ll see why these striking structures have always been a tremendous source of pride for the folks who live and work there. They also make for the perfect backdrop for all those selfies! 😉
While we’re on the subject of backdrops… don’t be surprised if things look a little familiar. Even if it’s your very first visit there’s a very good chance you’ve seen Lunenburg in one of its MANY starring roles. So many movie and TV productions have filmed in Lunenburg over the years – from series/streaming projects like LOCKE & KEY, THE SINNER and HAVEN to feature films like DELORES CLAIBORNE, SIMON BIRCH and JUMPING THE BROOM to oh so many Hallmark Movies. Lunenburg’s Seaport is legendary so we’re including a stroll along the lovely boardwalk. If she’s home you’ll have chance to see and celebrate The Bluenose II – with deck tours and sails available throughout the summer (check here for those) and a true MUST-DO while you’re down there – The Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic. The once a bustling fish processing plant is now stacked from top to bottom with wonderful exhibits and amazing attractions hosted by experienced Heritage Interpreters. It’s the perfect way to experience life in a fishing community and discover, up close, life at sea. You can take the guided tour or stroll through on your own – just be sure to visit the Ice House Theatre as films play there all day long. By now you’ll have worked up quite an appetite – lucky for your there are plenty of delicious dishes being served up in Lunenburg all year long. One of the newest spots on the scene with a wonderfully yummy menu is Hodgepodge Lunenburg Eatery and as the name should imply their gastronomic delights run the gamut. The inviting eatery, deli and pantry serves the best of both local & imported products. You’ll find the freshest of seafood in their hearty chowders and savoury soups along with lobster dishes too.
