Big Tancook Island is a very unique community located approx. 8 kms off Chester, in Mahone Bay.  It is accessible by ferry, the William G Ernst is stationed at Big Tancook and makes daily runs to and from the Chester.

Here, vibrant artistry, a pristine natural environment and a history deep rooted in fishing traditions intertwine.  Leave your cares on the mainland and take the relaxing hour long ferry to discover a hidden gem.

Take a walk to the Museum when you will discover stories of days gone by.  Visit Wishing Stones Studio and Gallery and peruse the stunning work of our nature photographers and local crafts.  BTI also has one of the last remaining “one room schoolhouses” in Canada.  There is also a Shark observatory on the island.  Beach glass hunting is always fun when you are there.

Ensure that you adhere to the ferry schedule timings as the ferry does not wait.  The Ferry holds 95 passengers and this number is enforced.  If there are overflow passengers, the ferry will make a return trip to pick them up.  Make sure that you get off at the cement wharf.  If you get off at the Wooden wharf, you will spend the day on Little Tancook which has 1 Geocache on it.  Do not try to get this geocache as you will spend the day on Little Tancook. My Mom was born here and my brother is buried here.  My family can trace our ties to the island back to the original German settlers in 1765.  My ties to this little island run deep.

I will meet each incoming ferry to ensure that any one with questions can get answers.  I have rented the Rec Center for the day/evening (there are signs on the main road with directions), which has indoor plumbing and a place to rest and WIFI.  Bring the food and water that you require for the day, as the restaurant probably will not be open.  The islanders are aware that this event is going to happen and will likely stop and talk to you.  Plse log your caches as you get them, even if it only with one letter, so I can find you if you need help.  I will provide my phone number when the ferry comes in so people who need to contact me during the day can do so.  The island also has its own 911 system and the first responders will find you.
